Working in the grid

The grid shows a hierarchy as a tree with columns. This page covers the toolbar, finding rows, the side panels, editing cells and the keyboard.

On this page

The page at a glance

From top to bottom, an open hierarchy shows:

  • The header, with the hierarchy's name, the row count and the state of the rules, the Panels menu and, for people with Control, Settings. When the hierarchy's description is set to show on opening, it appears here, and Hide puts it away until next time.
  • The layout bar, with Side by side and Full screen.
  • The toolbar: Add, the selection actions, Undo and Redo, Inside rule output (when rules are present), Expand, View settings, the view menu, Export and More actions (•••).
  • The find box, to search the rows by text or by tree query.
  • The transform bar, to filter, sort or group your own view. See Transforms.
  • The tree itself.

Expanding and collapsing

Click the arrow on a row, or press ← or → on the focused row. The Expand menu has Expand all, Collapse all and Expand to level 1, 2 or 3. The + and - keys expand or collapse every row. Above 5,000 rows, Expand all asks for confirmation first, because showing every row of a large tree can slow the page down.

Opening and closing rows counts as a change to the view, so saving the view also saves which rows are expanded.

Showing only one branch

Focus a row and choose Show only this branch in the selection menu. The tree then shows only that row and what is under it. A bar above the tree names the rows above it, so you can widen the branch one level at a time. Show everything brings the whole tree back.

Finding rows

Type in the Find rows box. With Text picked, the grid matches every word you type against each row's key, summary, status and assignee, and against the text of folders, memos and planning items, ignoring case. The box shows how many rows match and which one is focused, such as "2 of 5". Press Enter for the next match and Shift+Enter for the previous one.

Only matching rows, on by default, shows the matches with the rows above them. With it off, every row stays and the matches are marked.

Pick Tree query to find rows by where they sit, for example issues and children of jql "issuetype = Epic". See Tree queries.

View settings

View settings in the toolbar holds three personal choices, remembered in your browser:

  • Wrap text lets long values take several lines. Without it, rows keep one line and long text ends with an ellipsis.
  • Hide done leaves out issues in the Done status category. A done issue stays visible if rows that are still shown sit under it. Hide done also applies to finding, export and printing.
  • Clicking an issue key: Opens the issue, Shows it here (Jira's issue view over the page), or Selects the row.

You can't rearrange the hierarchy while Find rows shows only matches, while Hide done is on, or while a transform changes the rows. A note above the tree says why, with Show all rows to go back. You can still edit fields.

Side panels

The Panels menu in the header opens one panel at a time beside the tree:

Panel What it shows
Rules The hierarchy's rules. See Rules.
Write-backs The hierarchy's write-backs and their runs. See Write-backs.
History Who added, moved or removed rows, and when, newest first. Each person sees only changes to what they may see.
Duplicates Items that appear in more than one row, with Go to for each place.
Details The focused issue's status, work type, priority, assignee, reporter, due date, labels, dates and description.

The History panel keeps changes for a year, unless an admin turned that clean-up off.

Editing cells

You can edit a cell in place if you can edit the issue in Jira. Double-click the cell, or press F2 to edit the Summary of the focused row. While editing:

  • Tab and Shift+Tab save and move to the next or previous editable field of the row, then on to the next or previous issue.
  • Ctrl+↓ and Ctrl+↑ save and move to the same field one issue down or up.
  • Escape leaves the cell.

Jira checks each change, acting as you. If Jira refuses a change, the editor stays open and shows the reason. After a save, Ctrl+Z restores the previous value once, as long as nobody has changed the field since. A status moves only through its workflow, so you can't undo a status change this way.

For text longer than 100 characters, the cell shows the beginning and Show more. Export also contains only that first part, except for rows you opened with Show more.

Large trees

The grid draws only the rows on screen and reads issue data as you scroll, so large hierarchies stay quick. A total or progress value that is still waiting for issues below it is marked as incomplete until they arrive.

Keyboard shortcuts

These work in the tree. Press ? anywhere on the page to see them, or choose Keyboard shortcuts in the More actions menu. On a Mac, use Cmd for Ctrl.
